Maritime Horizons – Connecting Maritime VET with Ocean Literacy

“Maritime Horizons” is an educational programme at the 1st Vocational Upper Secondary School of Lixouri, Kefalonia, Greece. It connects maritime vocational education and training (VET) with ocean literacy, environmental responsibility and the local community.

Developed during the 2025–2026 school year, the programme brings together classroom learning, practical workshops, educational visits and student-created digital resources. Activities include visits to maritime training facilities, shipboard learning, lighthouse exploration and environmental education connecting land and sea.

Students take active roles as reporters, photographers, coordinators and creators. Through teamwork, observation and reflection, they connect navigation, ship technology and maritime careers with responsible behaviour towards the marine environment. Their work is shared through the programme’s website, e-portfolio and school-community presentations.

The planned continuation for 2026–2027 includes interdisciplinary ship-model projects, exploration of sustainable port practices and European school collaboration through eTwinning.

Coordinated by Petros Zekas, maritime educator and Master Mariner, Maritime Horizons welcomes partnerships with schools, researchers, maritime professionals and environmental organisations interested in developing practical ocean literacy activities together.

About Me

Petros Zekas

Maritime Educator | Master Mariner | Coordinator of “Maritime Horizons”

I am a maritime educator at the 1st Vocational Upper Secondary School of Lixouri, Kefalonia, Greece, and a Master Mariner with professional experience in shipping and port operations, including service as a Port Captain.

I coordinate “Maritime Horizons”, an educational programme connecting maritime vocational education with ocean literacy, environmental responsibility and the local community. Through practical workshops, educational visits, student projects and reflection, I help students explore the relationship between their future maritime careers and the protection of our seas.

My teaching interests include experiential and interdisciplinary learning, inclusive student participation, and collaboration between schools, maritime professionals and environmental organisations. I am also pursuing a master’s degree in Education, with an interest in participatory action research and project-based learning in vocational education.

Through the BlueLightS community, I would like to exchange teaching practices and develop European school partnerships around sustainable shipping, responsible ports and ocean literacy.
