Co-creating the future of blue education in Greece 🌊

From 1–3 July, Heraklion, Crete, hosted the Educational Marine/Freshwater Areas (EAs) Training Seminar, organized within the BlueLightS project. The three-day training brought together teachers, environmental educators, scientists, and representatives of environmental organizations to explore and adapt the Educational Marine/Freshwater Areas methodology for implementation in Greece.

Led by the French Biodiversity Office (OFB) in collaboration with the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), under the scientific coordination of Dr. Yolanda Koulouri, the seminar combined hands-on activities, collaborative learning, and co-design workshops. Participants worked together to develop educational resources, simulate the implementation of Educational Marine/Freshwater Areas, and propose a
framework tailored to the needs of Greek schools and local communities.

Beyond the exchange of knowledge, the training fostered a growing network of educators, researchers, and environmental practitioners committed to strengthening ocean literacy and empowering young people to actively participate in the protection of aquatic ecosystems.

This marks an important milestone towards introducing Educational Marine/Freshwater Areas in Greece and advancing innovative, participatory approaches to environmental education.
