About Me

Mr. Serkan Ünal
English Language Teacher in the Upper Secondary School
My Professional Background & Experience
I am a dedicated educator and educational project coordinator with over 20 years of professional experience in secondary education, currently serving at Yomra Anatolian High School in Trabzon, Türkiye. Throughout my career, I have worked closely with high school students aged 14 to 18, guiding them through academic development, project-based learning, and innovative learning processes. In addition to my classroom teaching, I play an active role in institutional development, curriculum enrichment, and coordinating regional and international educational projects in collaboration with local educational authorities, including the Trabzon Provincial Directorate of National Education.
My commitment to internationalization and continuous professional development is reflected in my extensive participation in European Union educational programs. In 2013, I completed a Comenius professional training program in Exeter, United Kingdom, which significantly broadened my perspective on global teaching methodologies. Building upon this foundation, in 2016 I coordinated an Erasmus+ KA101 staff mobility project in Prague, Czech Republic. This comprehensive project comprised two distinct mobility flows: the first focused on "Innovative Approaches to Teaching," while the second was dedicated to "Problem-Based Learning (PBL)." Managing the entire project lifecycle—from application and budgeting to implementation and dissemination—deepened my expertise in student-centered instruction, active learning strategies, and aligning national school practices with European standards.
Pedagogical Vision & Educational Focus
My professional focus revolves around pedagogical innovation, institutional digital transformation, and the ethical, systematic integration of emerging digital tools—such as Artificial Intelligence—into high school curricula. I believe that educational technology and active learning methodologies should act as catalysts for critical thinking, collaborative problem-solving, and student empowerment. I regularly lead internal workshops, peer-mentoring sessions, and collaborative group meetings to share best practices with colleagues, ensuring that individual teacher achievements evolve into sustainable, school-wide institutional practices.
Beyond digital literacy, I am deeply committed to interdisciplinary education and active citizenship. By combining Problem-Based Learning with real-world applications, my objective is to help students build essential 21st-century competencies, scientific inquiry skills, and a strong sense of environmental stewardship.
Motivation for Joining the BlueLightS Initiative
Situated in Trabzon along the Black Sea coastline, our school community is naturally connected to marine ecosystems, water conservation, and coastal sustainability. Joining the BlueLightS initiative aligns perfectly with our school’s long-term strategic vision of embedding environmental literacy and sustainability into the core curriculum.
Through the BlueLightS framework, my objective is to foster "Blue Sustainability" and water/ocean literacy among our 550 students, equipping them with the knowledge and problem-solving skills needed to address regional and global ecological challenges. By establishing international school partnerships, participating in collaborative "Blue Challenges," and aiming for European Blue School accreditation, we aspire to transform our institutional approach to environmental education. I am eager to collaborate with educators across Europe to exchange innovative teaching scenarios, share best practices, and inspire the next generation of environmentally conscious young leaders.
