Project name: Baltic Sea Actions
About the project
“Baltic Sea Actions” strengthens ocean literacy and ocean citizenship through student-led activities focused on the Baltic Sea. The project explores marine ecosystems, climate change, sustainability, and the Kvarken Archipelago UNESCO World Heritage Site, including its cultural significance.
Students co-develop learning materials and lead workshops, campaigns, and peer-learning activities, sharing their work both nationally and internationally through school networks and the Yhteinen Itämeri blog.
Work performed and main achievements
Students and teachers collaboratively developed Baltic Sea learning materials and tested them through classroom activities and workshops. Outdoor learning experiences in the Kvarken Archipelago provided hands-on insights into marine environments.
Students acted as UNESCO BSP ambassadors, leading peer-learning sessions and awareness activities. The project also included a national UNESCO ASPnet meeting in Vaasa, further strengthening collaboration and knowledge exchange.
Results produced by the project
The project produced a comprehensive Baltic Sea study module, including ready-to-use lessons, assignments, workshops, and student-led activities. These materials support the development of ambassador-led learning in schools and can be used across subjects and in international cooperation.
Key results include increased student knowledge, stronger engagement, enhanced teacher capacity, and the organisation of a national UNESCO schools meeting. Materials are shared through school networks and the Yhteinen Itämeri blog.
Engagement and impact
The project engaged all 900 students and 60 teachers at the school through workshops, campaigns, and learning activities. Students played a leading role as peer educators, supported by teachers, partner schools, NGOs, and expert organisations.
By combining education, collaboration, and student leadership, the project strengthened environmental awareness and promoted active ocean citizenship at both local and national levels.
