H20 – MOLECULE OD LIFE

Objectives of the project

H2O – Molecule of Life aimed to raise awareness about microplastics in local freshwater sources, including lakes and wells, while promoting freshwater conservation and responsible water use.

The project encouraged students to investigate water quality, biodiversity, and pollution through fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and cooperation with scientific and local partners.

It also aimed to strengthen students’ scientific curiosity, critical thinking, and environmental responsibility, while integrating water literacy and microplastics education into the school curriculum for future years.

Activities

Students collected water samples from local lakes and analysed them for microplastics and other water-quality indicators using microscopes, chemicals, and Vernier Logger Pro equipment.

They also documented macrophytes and benthic vegetation through underwater photography, creating a digital archive to support teaching, exhibitions, and awareness activities.

The project included study visits to FAZOS in Osijek, Đakovo water supply company, and Wienerberger, as well as workshops during Eco Day, Biodiversity Day, and activities with local primary schools.

Students and teachers also collaborated with a fishing association, a regional eco diving club, local institutions, and a partner school in Kiseljak, Bosnia and Herzegovina, through eTwinning.

Expected outputs

The project produced a report on water quality and the presence of microplastics in local freshwater sources.

It also created a digital photo archive of macrophytes and benthic vegetation, teaching materials for field and laboratory research, workshop materials, and exhibition content presenting underwater photos and microplastic findings.

The school also equipped its laboratory with microscopes, chemicals, fridges for samples, and other materials needed for future water analysis and practical research activities.

Impact

The project directly involved 200 students in field research, laboratory analysis, workshops, water sampling, field trips, and study visits, while around 400 more students participated in Eco Day activities and presentations.

It raised awareness among students, parents, teachers, and the local community about freshwater biodiversity, microplastics, and water preservation.

The project also strengthened local and international cooperation, including collaboration with primary schools, the Đakovo Fishing Association, the Tourist Board of Đakovo, Wienerberger, FAZOS, and a partner school in Kiseljak.

As a result, the school became certified as a European Blue School, and the project materials and equipment will continue to be used in future Eco School activities, lessons, and eTwinning projects.
