Coastal Observation and Awareness for a Sustainable Tomorrow
Objectives of the project
COAST – Coastal Observation and Awareness for a Sustainable Tomorrow aimed to develop students’ environmental awareness, ocean literacy, and understanding of coastal biodiversity. The project focused on the Black Sea coast, helping students explore the relationship between the natural environment and human activity.
It encouraged students to observe and investigate coastal ecosystems, understand the importance of protecting marine biodiversity, and develop responsible behaviour towards nature. The project also aimed to connect environmental education with local cultural and tourist heritage in Constanța, promoting active citizenship and community involvement.
Activities
Students participated in field activities on the Black Sea coast, including observation of local flora and fauna, beach greening actions, and discussions about fragile ecosystems and the impact of pollution.
They also took part in educational visits to the Dolphinarium, where they attended thematic demonstrations and discussed marine species, ecosystems, and conservation measures with specialists.
In the classroom, students transformed their experiences into creative outputs, including drawings, collages, posters, lapbooks, thematic projects, and portfolio sheets on marine biodiversity. They also explored local cultural and tourist heritage by identifying representative sites in Constanța and creating educational materials about them.
Expected outputs
The project produced a range of educational and creative materials, including tourist guides, leaflets, bookmarks, lapbooks, portfolios, posters, presentations, photographs, artistic products, and a thematic map of tourist attractions in Constanța.
These materials were used in curricular and extracurricular activities and shared with the school community through the school website, Facebook page, and the BlueLightS platform.
The outputs are intended to serve as examples of educational resources and good practices for future activities related to marine biodiversity, environmental conservation, and local heritage.
Impact
The project directly involved around 400 students and 16 teachers, offering them learning experiences based on exploration, collaboration, creativity, and active participation.
Students developed observation and investigation skills, improved their communication and teamwork abilities, and became more aware of the importance of protecting biodiversity and the marine environment.
The project also strengthened students’ connection to local heritage and community life. Parents and other community members were involved by following and supporting the students’ work, while the project’s results are expected to inspire future environmental education activities within the school and beyond.
