Project: HEVSEL – Heritage Education for Vitality & Sustainability in Ecosystems Learning
Objectives of the project
The Heritage Education for Vitality & Sustainability in Ecosystems Learning project aimed to strengthen ocean and water literacy among primary and secondary school students through place-based and experiential learning. Centred on the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hevsel Gardens and the Tigris River, the project connected local natural and cultural heritage with sustainability education.
Students engaged in STEAM-based activities such as water quality testing, digital mapping, eco-design workshops, and community clean-up events. By involving families, teachers, and local stakeholders, the project fostered active citizenship, environmental responsibility, and long-term awareness of ecosystem protection aligned with Mission Ocean objectives.
Activities
The project included hands-on STEAM workshops, outdoor field studies, and family-participatory activities. Students collected and analysed water samples from the Tigris River, created digital maps of the Hevsel Gardens, and designed sustainable ecosystem models using recycled materials.
Activities also involved strong community engagement through events such as Tigris Cleanup Day and a final project exhibition, bringing together students, families, and local stakeholders.
Expected Outputs
Key outputs of the project included a student-led Tigris River Health Report, digital ecosystem maps, eco-design models, and visual awareness materials.
Educational resources developed during the project were integrated into school activities and shared with the wider community to promote environmental literacy and sustainability practices.
Impact
The project actively involved students, teachers, families, and local partners. Students participated as researchers and designers, while families joined environmental activities and awareness events.
The project strengthened collaboration between the school and the community, increased environmental responsibility, and contributed to building a sustainable school culture.
