Project: WAVES
Objectives of the project
The main objective of this educational project was to raise awareness among young students about underwater noise pollution, a hidden threat to aquatic ecosystems. By focusing on freshwater systems around Skopje, it contributed to the zero-pollution goal and supported local biodiversity conservation.
Activities
Students, together with teachers and parents, took part in a hands-on workshop to design and build a classroom aquarium. They researched fish species, explored sound and vibration, and learned how to use vibration meters. Using these tools, they conducted simple scientific experiments to measure noise inside the aquarium and recorded data in charts.
They also carried out field measurements at the Vardar River and nearby water bodies, where students, working in small groups, used vibration meters to measure water noise. They compared results and discussed environmental implications.
Students summarised their findings in creative formats – digital posters, videos, and short presentations – and presented them at a school-wide event involving parents, local authorities, and eight schools from the municipality.
Throughout the project, students developed scientific and digital skills as well as critical thinking. The project integrated science, art, and civic education, helping students better understand aquatic ecosystems, environmental responsibility, and the importance of preserving biodiversity.
Expected outputs
The project produced different creative digital formats, including digital posters, videos, and short presentations. These outputs were presented at a school-wide event involving parents, local authorities, and eight schools from the municipality.
Impact
Students were actively involved in all stages of the project through research activities, teamwork, creative tasks, and presentations. Teachers guided and supported students throughout the project.
Parents were engaged through workshops and events, strengthening home–school collaboration. The local community was also involved through events, exhibitions, and awareness-raising activities related to environmental protection.
Through this project, we hope to inspire students to care for the environment, become
responsible and active citizens, and understand that small actions can make a big difference
