Project: Observe the marine biodiversity of Gulf of Naples

Objectives of the project

The objectives of this project were to monitor marine biodiversity in the Gulf of Naples, with a specific focus on plankton as a biodiversity and health indicator. The project aimed to combine satellite data analysis (Copernicus programme) with experimental sampling and laboratory observation of seawater samples.

It engaged students in authentic research activities, developing skills in scientific methodology, data analysis, and environmental monitoring. The project also aimed to raise awareness of marine pollution, especially microplastics, and its consequences on ecosystems and human health, in collaboration with local non-profit organisations in environmental protection, including Fondali in Campania.

It fostered inclusion by engaging all students, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds, in meaningful and collaborative scientific work. In addition, it aimed to produce and disseminate results through publications, school events, and participation in science contests and competitions. The project also contributed to the development of students’ 21st-century skills, such as critical thinking, digital literacy, problem solving, and teamwork.

Activities

The project included several key activities. Students received training sessions through introductory workshops on plankton, biodiversity, and Copernicus satellite data. They conducted field sampling by collecting seawater samples from the Gulf of Naples in collaboration with Fondali in Campania.

Laboratory work involved the analysis of plankton samples using microscopes and flasks, identification of species, and observation of microplastic contamination. Students also carried out satellite data analysis using Copernicus data to complement field observations, comparing trends and validating local findings.

Community engagement activities involved inviting parents and local citizens to participate in awareness events and discussions on marine sustainability. Dissemination activities included the preparation of presentations, posters, and digital content to share results in schools, local contests, and online platforms. Evaluation was conducted through regular monitoring of student progress, teacher reflection, and expert feedback to ensure continuous improvement.

Expected outputs

From a scientific perspective, the project generated qualitative and quantitative data on marine biodiversity in the Gulf of Naples, with particular attention to plankton communities. Students successfully identified different plankton taxa through microscopic observation, confirming plankton diversity as a reliable indicator of marine ecosystem health. In addition, microplastic particles were detected in several seawater samples, providing concrete evidence of marine pollution at a local scale.

The integration of Copernicus satellite data with field and laboratory observations allowed students to compare remote-sensing information with in situ measurements. This comparison strengthened data interpretation skills and improved understanding of spatial and temporal environmental patterns.

From an educational standpoint, the project produced didactic materials, including laboratory protocols, observation sheets, data tables, digital presentations, posters, and short scientific reports. These materials can be reused for future educational activities and shared with other schools.

The project also achieved social and outreach results. Awareness events and dissemination activities increased knowledge among students, families, and the local community about marine biodiversity, pollution, and sustainability. Collaboration with local non-profit organisations reinforced the link between scientific research and environmental protection.

Overall, the project enhanced students’ scientific literacy, research skills, and environmental responsibility, while promoting inclusion, teamwork, and active participation in real-world scientific investigation.

Impact

The project actively involved students in all phases of its implementation, from planning and data collection to analysis and dissemination. Students worked collaboratively in mixed-ability groups, ensuring inclusive participation and equal access to learning opportunities, including for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Through hands-on fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and satellite data interpretation, students experienced authentic scientific research and developed a strong sense of responsibility toward environmental monitoring.

Teachers, external experts, and local non-profit organisations, particularly Fondali in Campania, played a key role in supporting project activities by providing scientific guidance, technical expertise, and real-world context. Families and members of the local community were engaged through public events, presentations, and discussions focused on marine biodiversity and sustainability.

The project had a positive educational and social impact by strengthening students’ scientific skills, critical thinking, and environmental awareness. It also fostered a stronger connection between the school and the local territory, encouraging active citizenship and long-term commitment to environmental protection.
