Our Gardens, Your Oceans – Connecting Local Biodiversity with Global Water Awareness

Objectives of the project

The project “Our Gardens, Your Oceans – Connecting Local Biodiversity with Global Water Awareness” aimed to strengthen Ocean and Water Literacy by linking local action with global sustainability goals. Students created a biodiversity-friendly school garden using rainwater harvesting and nature-based solutions, while learning how responsible water management on land contributes to healthier oceans and waters.

Through citizen science, peer education, and international cooperation, the project empowered young people to become active environmental citizens.

Activities

Students planned and implemented a rainwater harvesting system and drip irrigation in the school garden Ekosfera Dwójki, transforming it into a water-efficient, biodiversity-rich learning space. They introduced native plant species that support pollinators and strengthen ecosystem resilience.

Students carried out citizen science activities by monitoring soil moisture, plant growth, and biodiversity indicators. They prepared and delivered peer-to-peer workshops for younger children and organised awareness-raising events for World Water Day, Biodiversity Day, and Earth Day.

A study visit to the Gliwice Canal connected theoretical knowledge with real-world water management practices. At the same time, international cooperation developed through eTwinning collaboration.

Expected Outputs

The project produced tangible environmental and educational outputs, including a functioning rainwater harvesting and drip irrigation system, a restored flower meadow with native species, and citizen science datasets on soil moisture and biodiversity.

Students created educational materials such as workshop scenarios, posters, presentations, and short videos. Project results were documented and shared with partner schools and the local community, supporting knowledge exchange and the replication of good practices.

Impact

Sixteen-year-old students actively participated in all stages of the project, from planning and implementation to monitoring, education, and communication. Younger children took part in interactive workshops, while teachers, parents, and local residents were engaged through open school events and community celebrations.

External partners provided expert input, strengthening the real-life relevance of the activities. The project increased environmental awareness, practical skills, and civic engagement, and reinforced the school’s role as a local hub for sustainability education.

By taking care of water and biodiversity in our school garden, students discover that they are already capable of protecting the oceans and shaping a sustainable future.
