<title>Environmental Action: Cleaning the Vrbas River Bank

On Tuesday, April 7, 2026, we carried out an environmental clean-up action along the banks of the Vrbas River, from the City Bridge to the Venice Bridge. The students were hardworking, motivated, and contributed to improving the appearance of the Vrbas riverbank.

This activity helps strengthen students’ environmental awareness, care for the environment, and encourages volunteer engagement.

The activity was implemented within the project “BioAqua Cycle – Cycle of Water, Life and Recycling”. The project is supported by Blue LightS – the 2nd Call for Blue Challenges in European Schools, based on the European Union mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030”. This call for proposals is part of the BlueLightS programme – EnLIGHTening Future Schools to Deliver BLUE Sustainability in Europe, funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme.

<title>**Visit to the Water Treatment Plant in Novoselija**

On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, students of grades III and IV who attend elective Biology classes visited the Water Treatment Plant in Novoselija. They were joined by students actively participating in the educational and environmental project “BioAqua Cycle – Cycle of Water, Life and Recycling”, accompanied by biology teacher Tanja Marić.

The students were introduced to the functioning of the water treatment plant by Sandra Bešlagić, BSc in Chemical Engineering Technology, from the Water Quality and Ecology Sector. They received useful information on how only high-quality and hygienically safe drinking water is delivered from the Vrbas River to consumers.

A particularly interesting part of the visit was the tour of the laboratory, where students became familiar with the laboratory’s organization, the methods and analyses carried out, as well as the glassware, devices, and instruments essential for water testing.

This visit provided an excellent opportunity for students to connect their previously acquired theoretical and practical knowledge about water and water quality analysis.

We would like to thank the Water Supply Company of Banja Luka for their hospitality, professional guidance during the visit, and kind reception.

<title>Visit to the Catholic School Centre “Petar Barbarić” in Travnik – Workshop “Biodiversity, Recycling and Water Protection”

On Monday, March 23, 2026, students from our school visited the Catholic School Centre “Petar Barbarić” in Travnik. The aim of this meeting was to connect the two schools through a partnership within the project “BioAqua Cycle – Cycle of Water, Life and Recycling”.

On this occasion, we conducted a workshop titled “Biodiversity, Recycling and Water Protection” for students from grades I to IV of the gymnasium who are members of the eco-biology section. In the first part of the workshop, the project was presented. This was followed by presentations on biodiversity (with special emphasis on the biodiversity of Bosnia and Herzegovina), recycling (with a focus on plastic and microplastics), and water quality and protection. After introducing the physical and chemical parameters of water quality, several experiments were also carried out.

The second part of the workshop was organized as group work. Each group was assigned the task of identifying one or more environmental problems and proposing possible solutions. The students were highly motivated and suggested solutions related to deforestation, water pollution, recycling, and other environmental issues.

We would like to thank the administration and students of the Catholic School Centre “Petar Barbarić” for their hospitality.

Our school was represented by the following students: Mihaela Ivaštanin, Kristina Pilić, Anđela Kezić, Ema Milić, and Luka Ćopić, accompanied by school pedagogist Aleksandra Veselinović and biology teacher Tanja Marić.

After the workshop, we visited the town of Travnik, and on the way back we made a short stop at the waterfall in Jajce.

This activity was implemented within the project “BioAqua Cycle – Cycle of Water, Life and Recycling”.

<title>The workshop and lecture “Biodiversity, Plastic and River Protection” marked the beginning of the project “BioAqua Cycle – Cycle of Water, Life and Recycling”.

On Tuesday, March 3, 2026, our school hosted a workshop and lecture titled “Biodiversity, Plastic and River Protection” for fourth-grade students. This activity was planned within the framework of the project “BioAqua Cycle – Cycle of Water, Life and Recycling”, which will be implemented at the school in the coming months. The project is supported by Blue LightS – the 2nd Call for Blue Challenges in European Schools, based on the European Union mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030”.

This was an excellent opportunity for an interdisciplinary approach to teaching Biology and Geography, as well as a relevant topic for the Student Community and Education for Democracy classes. In the fourth grade, students study ecology in Biology and Bosnia and Herzegovina in Geography according to the curriculum. The students attended a lecture on biodiversity, with special emphasis on the Vrbas River. They also discussed recycling, students’ habits regarding recycling, and their suggestions for improvement. Students actively involved in the project introduced participants to the life cycle of a plastic bottle and the environmental consequences of improper plastic disposal. As a first step as a school, we have started collecting and recycling plastic bottles, which will be taken to a company specialized in plastic recycling.

For the implementation of this activity, we collaborated with a representative of the Center for Environment, Nikola Kurija, who demonstrated methods for measuring certain water parameters from samples taken from the Vrbas, Suturlija, and Crkvena rivers. Additionally, in February, students actively involved in the project conducted pH measurements of three water samples from the Vrbas River (Rekavice, the city center near the City Bridge, and Priječani).

“The aim of this workshop was to show students how sensitive the balance in river ecosystems is and how changes in biotic factors affect their living world. We also discussed the problems they notice in environmental protection in Banja Luka and how they should be addressed. I believe that students will better remember information delivered through interactive workshops like this one, and the Catholic School Centre is one of the few schools in Banja Luka willing to engage in this type of cooperation.” – Nikola Kurija.

“These activities are of great importance for educating younger generations in order to strengthen environmental awareness, improve their attitude towards the environment, and increase appreciation for the biodiversity of our country. Furthermore, the correlation between subjects that cover similar or related content is an excellent example of how teaching can be made more interesting and creative, while still achieving learning outcomes.” – Tanja Marić, Biology teacher.

At the end, a discussion was held in which students shared their views on the topic. The impression is that they were satisfied with the activity and recommend that more lessons be conducted in a similar way. Several students later reflected on the topic through creative drawings and essays.
