Experimentation in Greece

“Blue education is vital in a country where the sea plays a pivotal role in daily life, ensuring thatthe legacy of Greece’s maritime tradition continues to thrive.”

Yolanda Koulouri, Marine biologist at HCRM, responsible for the experimentation in Greece

What is the current status of Blue Education in Greece

Greece has a framework including lab skills in primary and middle schools focusing on four key areas: health, environmental awareness, social responsibility and future-ready careers-including fields like robotics and STEM.

In December 2023, the Greek Ministry of Education also introduced a framework for education on terrestrial, coastal, marine, freshwater ecosystems in schools.

In November 2024, Greece announced a new framework of Greek School Curriculum, strongly characterized by sustainability education and active citizenship including the above-mentioned frameworks.

Considering this context, the level of maturity of Blue Education in the Greek system could be considered “moderate”, with strong potential development and deeper integration into school curricula.

What are the BlueLightS experimentation activities Greece

The Greek experimentation is based on three main pillars:

  • Co-designing and co-developing blue projects with school teachers and principals to test the Educational Areas concept, support to these schools to implement the concept;
  • Organizing webinars or seminars for teachers’ training on blue education and blue careers;
  • Engaging with different stakeholders to include and adjust tested methods and training to the new framework for sustainability education and active citizenship.
