A recent study published in the “Voice for the blue” reveals that over the past two decades, more than 20% of the world’s oceans have darkened, reducing the depth of the photic zone—the sunlit upper layer vital for marine ecosystems. This phenomenon threatens marine biodiversity, disrupts food webs, and impairs the ocean’s role in oxygen production and climate regulation. Scientists attribute the darkening to factors like climate change, shifting ocean currents, and increased nutrient runoff, emphasizing the urgent need for global action to address these changes .
