Varuhi in Varuhinje Rek: Guardians of Slovenian Rivers
Inland waters are a crucial part of the Blue Education ecosystem. In Slovenia, the grassroots initiative Varuhi in Varuhinje Rek (Guardians of the Rivers) is leading the way in raising public awareness about the current state of Slovenian inland waters and the threats they face. The organization focuses on bottom-up civic action: they organize workshops for members of local environmental initiatives to exchange experiences and coordinate campaigns. For European schools, this is a powerful example of active citizenship. Teaching students about river conservation through the lens of local “Guardians” shows them that protecting community waterways is a democratic responsibility accessible to everyone.
