Mediterrània is life

Objectives of the project

Mediterrània is Life aimed to transform marine education into a whole-school experience by engaging students, teachers, and external stakeholders in interdisciplinary activities focused on Ocean Literacy and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The project encouraged students to explore the ecological, cultural, and economic value of the Mediterranean Sea, while promoting responsible environmental behaviours, active citizenship, and long-term commitment to sustainability.

It also aimed to strengthen the school’s identity as a European Blue School and connect marine education with different subjects, local organisations, public institutions, and European initiatives.

Activities

The project included a wide range of interdisciplinary activities combining formal and non-formal learning. Students visited Oceanogràfic València to learn about Mediterranean biodiversity, marine conservation, and sustainable fisheries.

They also took part in workshops on plastic circularity, citizen science activities related to microplastics monitoring, environmental awareness campaigns, plogging activities, and waste analysis.

Creative and cultural activities included a marine mural, creative writing and photography competitions, multilingual recycled-art activities, sustainable gastronomy workshops with local fishermen and chefs, and the production of educational materials on Mediterranean biodiversity.

Expected outputs

The project produced multilingual awareness posters, promotional videos, printed and digital dissemination materials, and a large banner celebrating the school’s official recognition as a European Blue School.

Students also created original learning materials, including The Guardians of the Mediterranean, an interdisciplinary book presenting Mediterranean species through scientific research, creative writing, and artistic illustration.

Other outputs included marine-themed stories and photographs, environmental data analysis from plogging activities, podcasts, videos, leaflets, reusable sandwich wraps, and traditional Mediterranean food prepared following sustainable principles.

Impact

The project directly involved 180 students and indirectly reached around 200 more students through exhibitions, dissemination campaigns, podcasts, videos, leaflets, awareness activities, and school displays.

It strengthened students’ environmental responsibility, creativity, scientific thinking, active citizenship, and understanding of Ocean Literacy. The project also supported inclusion by involving students from the AVANT Classroom in environmental awareness activities and creative work with recycled marine-themed materials.

The project helped IES Mediterrània obtain official recognition as a European Blue School for the 2025/2026 school year and reinforced its long-term commitment to sustainability, active citizenship, and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Its resources and methodology will continue to be used in different subjects and can inspire other schools interested in Ocean Literacy, interdisciplinary education, and community-based marine learning.
