Project: Ocean Voices: Podcasts for a Sustainable Blue Future
Objectives of the project
Ocean Voices engaged students in exploring marine and freshwater ecosystems through the creation of educational podcasts. By integrating science, digital literacy, and creative expression, the project developed key 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, and environmental responsibility.
The project made environmental education more accessible and engaging, while encouraging active citizenship and raising awareness of ocean conservation and sustainability.
Activities
Students participated in research activities, workshops, and the production of educational podcasts on ocean and freshwater ecosystems. Teachers and external experts guided them in content development, recording, and editing, helping to ensure scientific accuracy and high-quality outputs.
The workshops developed students’ research, digital, and communication skills, while open-schooling approaches connected their learning to real-world environmental issues.
All students benefited from the project. While smaller groups took the lead in podcast production, other students participated in workshops and attended viewing and listening sessions.
The project strengthened interdisciplinary learning and enhanced students’ digital and communication competencies. It also increased environmental awareness and resulted in the creation of reusable podcasts and educational resources for the school and wider community.
Expected outputs
The project produced a range of tangible and digital outputs that could be used as educational resources both within the school and beyond.
These included:
- Educational podcasts created by students on marine and freshwater ecosystems, sustainability, and ocean conservation.
- Interactive and hands-on workshops designed to raise awareness of ocean and freshwater ecosystems, sustainability, and other blue topics.
- Digital resources and communication materials, including videocasts, presentations, and visual summaries, which were shared through the school website and online platforms.
All outputs were designed to be reused in future interdisciplinary projects, supporting environmental education, digital literacy, and collaborative learning across different grade levels.
Impact
The project actively involved students across all grade levels through research, workshops, podcast production, and school-wide activities.
While smaller groups led the production of the podcasts, all students benefited from listening and viewing sessions, interactive workshops, and wider school events, ensuring broad participation.
Teachers, external experts, and members of the local community supported the project by providing guidance, knowledge, and feedback. Their involvement strengthened collaboration and created opportunities for mentorship.
The project increased students’ environmental awareness and developed their interdisciplinary, digital, and communication skills. It also encouraged teamwork, creativity, and active citizenship.
The outputs and experiences generated through the project had a lasting impact on the school community and created a model that could support future educational initiatives.
Through this project, we empowered students to use digital skills and creativity to raise awareness, take action, and contribute to a sustainable blue world.
