About the project
“School Bells for the Ocean” aims to strengthen water and ecosystem literacy by focusing on the Danube River and its environmental challenges. The project empowers students to become environmental leaders while supporting teachers in integrating water-related topics into their teaching.
It promotes collaboration between schools, families, and local stakeholders, encourages sustainable behaviours, and highlights the shared responsibility of Danube countries. By combining environmental education with cultural heritage, the project seeks to inspire long-term engagement in protecting the river.
Work performed and main achievements
The project includes interactive workshops where students explore the Danube ecosystem through engaging lessons, games, and multimedia content. Scientific knowledge is enriched with folklore, helping students understand both the ecological and cultural importance of the river.
Teachers participate in training sessions that provide practical tools and resources to integrate water literacy into their curricula, including materials that connect environmental topics with Bulgarian traditions.
A community eco-festival brings together students, parents, artists, and local stakeholders through performances, exhibitions, and information activities inspired by Danube folklore. These activities strengthen community connections and promote active participation in conservation efforts.
Results produced by the project
The project will deliver educational toolkits with lesson plans, games, and interactive activities, as well as a manual featuring folklore, myths, and stories related to the Danube and water.
A short film will document the project’s implementation and key messages. Workshops, a teacher training seminar, and a cultural festival will engage students, educators, and the wider community.
Students will improve their understanding of the Danube ecosystem and their role in its protection, while teachers will gain new skills and resources for interdisciplinary teaching.
