About the project

This project raises awareness among students and the wider community about the widespread presence of microplastics and their environmental impact. Students are trained to detect microplastics in water samples and share their findings locally.

The initiative also promotes collaboration with European schools, encouraging knowledge exchange and supporting students in becoming informed, active citizens engaged in environmental issues.

Work performed and main achievements

Students collect water samples from the Vrbas River and, in collaboration with the University of Banja Luka, analyse them to identify microplastics, including their size, shape, and quantity. The findings are then shared with the public.

An online awareness campaign highlights the risks of microplastic pollution and promotes actions individuals can take to reduce their impact.

Students also adapt a low-cost method for detecting microplastics using mobile phones and train 60 peers across three high schools in Banja Luka. The project further includes collaboration with a European school, including a study visit to exchange knowledge and best practices.

Results produced by the project

The project produces data on microplastic pollution in the Vrbas River and shares the findings through social media and local media outreach.

Students develop educational materials, including a practical manual on low-cost microplastic detection, supporting peer learning across schools.

The initiative strengthens collaboration between schools and expands its impact through awareness campaigns that reach a broader audience and encourage more sustainable behaviours.

Engagement and impact

Students lead all stages of the project, from sampling and analysis to communication and peer training, with support from teachers and university experts.

The project engages multiple stakeholders, including three high schools, university staff, local media, and an international partner school. It builds students’ scientific, communication, and leadership skills while fostering environmental responsibility.
